About the Foundation Your Foundation At Work
The Amarillo Area Foundation is a full service community foundation,
providing an array of philanthropic services that work to improve,
protect, and ensure continued charity throughout the Texas Panhandle in
perpetuity. Since 1957, the Amarillo Area Foundation has expanded to
focus on the following six areas of operation:
- Investment Management.
The Amarillo Area Foundation and The Don and
Sybil Harrington Foundation are responsible for maintaining portfolio
management oversight on combined assets of approximately $150 million.
The Investment Committee meets on a quarterly basis to review the
performance of the portfolio and financial statements as well as set
investment policy.
- Development and Donor Services.
The Amarillo Area Foundation serves
as a repository for charitable funds and relies on donors in the 26
counties to use the Foundation as a vehicle for meeting area needs
through philanthropy. Staff work with donors and prospective donors to
assess their needs, learn of their philanthropic wishes and develop a
customized set of services to meet the donor's goals.
- Grantmaking.
Through discretionary grantmaking, the Foundation seeks to support the
entire range of human needs in the Panhandle. Because the Foundation's
resources are limited, the Board of Directors is forced to make
judgments based on relative need and potential impact.
- Project Initiation and Development.
Since 1991, the Foundation has taken the lead in initiating and
developing a wide range of projects designed to meet some of the most
pressing health, social, environmental and educational needs within our
service area.
- Facilitation.
Foundation staff frequently facilitates various group meetings in order
to assist participants in their efforts to think collectively, decide on
a future direction for their services or to determine commitment to a
new process. Many times, facilitation results in the Foundation
initiating a project or program in the community.
- Management and Technical Assistance.
The Nonprofit Service Center provides the following services to
nonprofit organizations in the 26 northernmost counties of Texas:
- Information and referral.
- Complimentary review of proposals to be submitted to other
foundations.
- Complimentary one-hour consultation (review of situation and
recommendations for improvement).
- Fee-based contractual assistance (board training, strategic
planning, feasibility studies, fund development planning, review
and updating of policies and bylaws, grantwriting).
- Workshops (grantwriting, fundraising).
- Nonprofit Resource Library service.
